Questions I Have About The Dentist

Having spent about half an hour in the dentist's chair this week I had plenty of time to think of some questions that have always troubled me about dentistry.

Why can't they invent a dental drill that is silent?  I think at least 80% of the anxiety I feel at the dentists comes from that high-pitched whine.

Why does my jaw hurt so badly for days after I get a filling?  Could it be because I tense up the muscles in my neck in anticipation of horrible pain that never comes?

Why does the numbing agent they use last so incredibly long?  My mouth remained numb for at least three hours after I was home.  Causing me to mumble incoherently, and drool a little.  Oh well, it provided my children with lots of giggles at mommy's expense.

Why do the ceramic fillings smell so incredibly bad?  I was convinced they were pouring super glue into my tooth.

Lest you think otherwise I have a very good dentist.  She is incredibly patient and kind to my children, and puts up with my dentist anxiety.  I am truly thankful for the care she provides, but I don't think I will ever enjoy going to the dentist.

Do you like going to the dentist?  Please tell me I'm not the only one with this phobia.

  1. I don't mind going to the dentist. Of course I don't have a dental fear. Growing up I had a gental dentist and he was my dentist until I was an adult.

  2. Christine, The dentist I had growing up was rather prone to chuckle somewhat gleefully over your cavities. :) He wasn't rough---just a little vindictive. :)

  3. I hate going to dentists! My first time, when I was about six, I had three teeth pulled. Not a good way to start out.

  5. Are you sure you aren't my twin? I had 13 teeth pulled. Nine of them, one at a time. Nine you say? Yes, because once they pulled the wrong one...dentist phobia? Yeah, I got that. Good thing we have kids and force ourselves to go for the example, eh?

I think that was specifically designed for you.

"Causing me to mumble incoherently, and drool a little."

    Business as usual, eh?
